FAQ

  • I HAVE NEVER BOUGHT A MADE TO ORDER PRODUCT BEFORE, WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

When you purchase a made to order product you are buying time in our workshop. To help our production efficiency we collect orders over a few weeks and produce them in batches. You will find normal lead time in each products description but please understand that factors like high order volume can cause delays. Our lead times are an estimate, not a guarantee. If you have a strict deadline for when you need the product by please let us know before ordering.

  • ARE RECLAIMED MATERIALS DURABLE?

Pre and post consumer reclaimed materials can be found in an infinite range of qualities and conditions. It is up to us to select the right ones that will deliver long term value to our products. We stick to high quality natural materials that show light or no wear and we prioritize their longevity by using them appropriately. A pillow, hat, and hunting jacket all made with the same material will have different lifespans. Therefore the durability of a material is directly linked to the object is is made into and how that object will be used. Our selection of materials, the way we cut them, repair them, and utilize them all build a comprehensive system of durability where the long term usefulness of an object is the priority.

  • WHY ONLY NATURAL MATERIALS?

We only use natural materials in our products because they are the healthiest, most sustainable, and best looking option. Unlike synthetics, natural materials age beautifully and gain value over time when they are cared for properly. By only using natural materials like wool, leather, and cotton we invest in the entire lifespan of our products and create long term value for our customers, communities, and ecosystems.

  • CAN YOU MAKE ME A QUILT JACKET?

No. We maximize the longevity and beauty of the materials we work with, not destroy it. We are deeply saddened to see some “upcycling” brands making products out of historically significant antiques such as Amish quilts or hand woven coverlets. It is a shame to see value destroyed in this pretentious and lazy way. We tactfully select materials for their physical qualities, not their intrinsic value. In this way we hope to honor the generations of craftsman who came before us and protect their noble work.

  • DO YOU USE NEW MATERIALS?

It would not be possible to make our products without the use of some new materials. We place the highest value on extending the lifespan of the reclaimed materials and will supplement new materials when the project requires it. We are completely transparent, we list every single material in a product’s description so you can make an informed decision.

  • WHAT MAKES YOUR CONSTRUCTION HIGH QUALITY?

Our construction is high quality because we control it from the beginning. We make our own patterns, develop prototypes, and sample until every detail is resolved. Nothing is handed off to someone else to figure out. We decide exactly how a product is built, how it should look, how it should feel in hand, and we keep refining it until it meets our standard. We keep a small offering and do not work on a trend cycle. Every product gets the same level of time, attention, and scrutiny as the last. We do not release anything until we are fully confident in the construction, quality, and overall appearance.

  • ARE YOUR PRODUCT CONSIDERED VINTAGE?

Our use of reclaimed materials gives us the unique opportunity to make products in the “goldilocks zone” - things that don’t quite feel new, don’t quite feel used, but are somehow “just right”. Our products are technically new but they share a lot of the qualities that make vintage clothing feel so good. This is because, like vintage, our materials have been aged. The exposure to time and human touch imparts a palpable energy on them that is impossible for other brands to replicate - although they do try!

  • WHO ARE YOU INSPIRED BY?

We are most deeply inspired by the Shakers and we consider them the paramount of American craft. We try to build on the work they left behind by taking inspiration from their design philosophy and work style instead of their aesthetic. The shakers embodied an honesty, community, and a spiritual devotion to their craft. Utility was the filter for creation and they rejected anything pretentious or superfluous. We hope to emulate their integrity in our work.

  • WHY DON'T YOU HAVE SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATIONS?

We have not spent the time or effort to certify anything, we are a small team and have never felt the need or desire to justify our work in this way. We are extremely skeptical of any marketing system designed to sell more products under the guise of sustainability. We instead opt for radical transparency, listing every material we use for each product so you can make your own informed decision. If you want to visit our workroom to see exactly how our products are made we would love to have you.

  • WHO WERE THE LUDDITES?

Before the industrial revolution, British textile workers who mastered their craft achieved genuine social status and high wages. The Luddites correctly identified the industrialization of the textile industry as an existential threat to their livelihoods. They organized a resistance, broke into factories, and destroyed the mechanized looms and knitting frames that sought to replace them. Their movement was immediately crushed by overwhelming violence from the British state. The Luddites

  • SHOULDN'T YOUR PRICES BE LOWER BECAUSE YOU USE OLD MATERIALS?

Reclaimed materials are not for everyone. They are difficult to source at scale and are usually more expensive than a comparable virgin material due to their rarity. Before we can even begin production a huge amount of labor is required to prepare them in line with our quality standards. We must break down, clean, sort, prep, recolor, mend, patchwork etc. All of this work is hands on and can only be done by skilled laborers with a strong sense of aesthetic intuition. Our clients understand the value and novelty of these materials.
